Kedarnath Temple: Ancient History and Spiritual Significance
Kedarnath Temple stands as a testament to faith, devotion, and architectural brilliance in the lap of the mighty Himalayas at 3,583 meters.
Legendary Origins
According to Hindu mythology, after the Mahabharata war, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva's blessings to atone for killing their relatives. Lord Shiva, not willing to grant them an easy audience, took the form of a bull (Nandi) and tried to hide in the Himalayas.
When the Pandavas, led by Bhima, found him at Kedarnath, Lord Shiva dived into the ground, leaving his hump on the surface. This hump-shaped rock is what is worshipped at Kedarnath temple.
Other body parts appeared at four other locations, forming the sacred Panch Kedar - Tungnath (arms), Rudranath (face), Madhyamaheshwar (navel), and Kalpeshwar (hair).
