Planning your Char Dham Yatra? This comprehensive guide covers everything from best time to visit, what to pack, travel tips, and essential information for a smooth pilgrimage.

Complete Guide to Char Dham Yatra 2025

The Char Dham Yatra is one of the most revered pilgrimages in Hinduism, taking devotees through four sacred shrines nestled in the Himalayas of Uttarakhand.

The Four Sacred Dhams

1. Yamunotri

The source of river Yamuna, Yamunotri is the westernmost shrine in the circuit. The temple dedicated to Goddess Yamuna sits at an altitude of 3,293 meters.

2. Gangotri

Located at 3,100 meters, Gangotri is where the holy Ganga descended to earth. The temple overlooks the roaring Bhagirathi River.

3. Kedarnath

At 3,583 meters, Kedarnath houses one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. It requires a 16 km trek from Gaurikund.

4. Badrinath

The easternmost dham at 3,133 meters is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It's accessible by road, making it suitable for all age groups.

Best Time to Visit

The char dham temples open around late April/early May and close in November. The ideal time is:

  • May-June: Pleasant weather, temples freshly opened, moderate crowds
  • September-October: Post-monsoon, clear skies, fewer tourists, best mountain views
  • Avoid July-August: Heavy monsoons and landslide risks
